Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant

Liberia Electricity Corporation

Montserrado County, Liberia

Ground investigation, earthworks assessment and design and construction of a grout curtain at the Mount Coffee Hydroelectric Project. The scheme comprised the rehabilitation of a hydroelectric power plant that had fallen into disrepair during the Liberian Civil War.

Quantum undertook a number of ground investigation packages for a variety of elements associated with the redevelopment of the site including proposed transmission line towers, proposed sub-stations and new dams.

A geological mapping exercise backed up by extensive trial pitting was undertaken to characterise the available residual soil materials in the locality for suitability for use as earthworks materials for new dam construction.

A grout curtain was required for a new section of earth dam to replace a previously breached section. Quantum initially designed and delivered the ground investigation and subsequently undertook grout mix and curtain layout design following extensive on-site laboratory and field trials. The curtain was successfully constructed in full accordance with the GIN system and comprehensively tested for compliance to the satisfaction of the Client’s engineers.

All the work was undertaken using our own specialist plant and equipment imported from the UK and we provided UK specialists to train, supervise and manage a team of West African national labourers and operatives.
