    Ferryside Stabilisation

    We have the signed contract in hand to undertake slope and retaining wall stabilisation works in Ferryside, Carmarthenshire. The soil nailing and retaining wall re-build scheme will be done in-house by Quantum’s Geo-Contracting team. Works will commence shortly.

    Ebbw Vale Mine Workings

    GI Works are underway at Rhyd Y Blew, Ebbw Vale. We’re investigating shallow mine workings and two possible mineshafts using two of our Commachio MC600 drill rigs and bespoke safety drilling platforms. With over 35 years’ experience drilling in the South Wales Coal Field, and origins in the coal mining sector, we pride ourselves on first-hand knowledge of the SW Coal Field.

    BCI Awards

    We had a fantastic evening had at the British Construction Industry Awards 2018 in London, where Quantum were finalists in the ‘Exporting Expertise Initiative of the Year’ category.     Swansea Station GI

    Ground Investigation works at Swansea Station are complete after a combination of night shifts, day shifts, road closures and rail possessions.     Caerleon Road Instability

    Swansea Station GI Works Underway

    £180,000 ground investigation works at Swansea Station are underway, working for our Client and Project PC Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd – Rail Division. Works are progressing well with CP drilling, Rotary drilling, CPTs, over 300 Masonry cores, hand inspection pits, window sampling, UXO surveying and GPR surveying. End of August completion. Local work for local companies.

    Cwmavon Soil Nailing

    Soil nailing works at Cwmavon, Port Talbot, are well underway following a significant landslide in January 2018. Working on behalf of Neath Port Talbot County Council (NPTCBC), the rope access element of the works has progressed well with TEI Mast drilling works to commence shortly. Excellent relationships and support from NPTCBC and nearby residents. We are proud to deliver local projects and enhance public safety.

    Week Ford Bridge

    Significant progress has been made at our Week Ford bridge project in Bude. Our Geo-Contracting team have completed all foundation works and are currently constructing formwork for the new road bridge deck followed by bespoke stone masonry finish to the bridge abutments. A challenging project which is delivering excellent results.

    East Coker Flood Alleviation Scheme

    Ground Investigation works have commenced on the East Coker Flood Alleviation Scheme near Yeovil, on behalf of Wessex Water. The scheme involves a series of 25m deep rotary drilled boreholes, in-situ testing and sampling.

    Churchfield GI, Kidderminster

    Ground Investigation works are well underway in the Churchfields area of Kidderminster. Appointed to undertake a series of trial pits, boreholes and road cores under traffic management and nightshift road closures by Worcester County Council (WCC), Quantum are delighted to be building such a strong relationship with WCC with CH2M Hill (UK) scheme engineers.

    A38 Haldon Hill Green Bridge GI

    Quantum have been appointed Ground Investigation Contractor for the proposed A38 Haldon Hill Green Bridge by Highways England. This is one of several schemes we have been awarded by Highways England across the South West and East Midlands areas. Works are scheduled to commence in late April.

    Soil Nailing on NMWTRA Scheme near Welshpool

    Quantum will commence works in early March on behalf of Dawnus Construction at the Braich Llwyd widening scheme on the B458 near Welshpool. The contract comprises the design and construction of temporary slope stabilisation in the form of soil nails. Approximately 178 No Dywidag R32 soil nails will be installed over an area of 230 square meters by one of our TEI Hem 560 drilling masts mounted on a 20 ton excavator.

    Laying the foundations for ‘Skydome’

    Quantum have successfully tendered for the design and construction of foundation piles for the Skydome project at Bluestone resort in Pembrokeshire. Test piles were installed and tested at the end of February and will provide our Designers with information to develop the preliminary pile design which comprised 178 No. 240mm diameter piles. The Skydome is the first development of its kind in the UK and will bring 7000 square meters of the outdoors, indoors!

    Chipping Warden HS2

    Quantum start work on HS2. Having targeted the geotechnical requirements for the enabling works and construction phases of HS2, Quantum have just been appointed as ground investigation contractors for the Chipping Warden HS2 Enabling Works project. Providing cable percussive drill rigs, crews and road pavement coring crews complete with NRSWA site personnel, works will commence late February. RPS are fulfilling the role of Investigation Supervisor and our Client.

    Cwmafan Landslip Stabilisation

    Quantum have been awarded a contract to stabilise a landslide on the B4286 near Port Talbot. The contract is let by Neath Port Talbot County Council on a design & build basis with all aspects carried out by our in house specialist teams. Vegetation clearance, surveying, preliminary ground investigation drilling as well as pull out tests will be completed in early March with a view to commencing stabilisation works in late March.

    Westway Bridge GI

    Ground Investigation works at Westway Bridge, Newport draw to an end. The programme required one week of nightshifts under full lane closure to enable two of our rotary rigs to install inclinometers and extensometers into the crest of the bridge embankment, followed by one week dayshifts along the toe of the embankment. A six-week monitoring programme is now underway to collect, collate and process the inclinometer and extensometer data by our qualified and highly trained Technicians. We have formed an excellent rapport with client Vinci Concessions during this £86,000 contract.

    Exeter University GI Win!

    Another win for the South West Office! Quantum South West has been awarded the ground investigation contract at Exeter University. With a value of >£100k, a full range of geotechnical services are to be provided by Quantum across three areas of the University for planned development; including borehole drilling, instrumentation installation, geophysical surveys and in-situ testing culminating in a Geotechnical Design Report for each area of the site. An exciting local project for our Exeter Office which we are proud to be part of.

    Ebbw Vale Steel Works GI

    Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council award Quantum £35,000 ground investigation at Plot 4, Former Ebbw Vale Steel Works Site. Works to include cable percussive and rotary cored boreholes supplemented by trial pits, in-situ testing and an array of geotechnical and environmental testing. Quantum will provide both an Interpretative and Geotechnical Design Report for the scheme. Works to start late January.

    Grouting Works at Usk Reservoir Completed

    January 2018 saw the completion of a major investigation and grouting programme at Usk Reservoir on behalf of Skanska as part of the Welsh Water Capital Delivery Alliance. The works comprised 78 No. Lugeon tests with 133 corresponding pressure grouting injections in the approach channel as well as 830 No. grout injection holes in the tumble basin and spillway and supplementary polyurethane resin injection and investigative drilling of the clay dam core. The works were successful and completed on programme.

    Pont-y-Frithwaun River Bridge

    Siteworks at Pont-Y-Frithwaun River Bridge are now complete which involved cable percussive and rotary cored boreholes within the existing carriageway of the A4061 trunk road. The works were done under lane closures and traffic management as provided by Quantum and all works fully reinstated by Quantum’s NRSWA Street Works Qualified site personnel. The Investigation Supervisor was Capita Symonds, with the Client being Bridgend County Borough Council.

    Natural Resources Wales Schemes

    A New Year and a New Reservoir scheme! Natural Resource Wales award Quantum ground investigation works at Cronfeydd Gwydyr Reservoirs. The three reservoirs are set in the heart of Snowdonia National Park; namely Llyn Sarnau, Llyn Cyfty and Llyn Tyn Y Mynydd Reservoirs. The works commenced and completed within the month of January on programme and on budget under challenging weather conditions and within an ecologically sensitive environment. All parties were extremely happy with the works undertaken and the due care and attention given to the eco-sensitive setting.

    Framework Successes

    Quantum’s Regional Exeter Office goes from strength to strength! Having gained a prestigious spot on the Highways England Framework for Geotechnical Services as of Autumn 2017 for the next 4 years, in addition to the Wessex Water Framework running until 2022, Quantum are delighted to have now successfully delivered GI schemes on both frameworks gaining valuable procedural experience, building excellent relations and obtaining high praise from respective Clients. In our 6th year of trading from our Exeter office, we are looking forward to an excellent 2018 in the South West.

    Cantref Reservoir Scheme

    Quantum have been awarded another Reservoir scheme under the Central Alliance Delivery Framework for Dwr Cymru Welsh Water. Alliance Partner, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) awarded Quantum the prelim geophysical survey phase as prelude to a possible future intrusive ground investigation. This Phase 1 survey will target the shoulders of the dam and lands immediately adjacent the spillway at Cantref Reservoir, just north of Merthyr. Using Ground Conductivity (Electro Magnetic) and Resistivity Tomography surveying techniques the aim is to identify potential areas for future remediation and strengthening.

    Week Ford Bridge Replacement

    Quantum began work on a bridge replacement scheme on behalf of CORMAC Solutions in December 2017. The scheme includes the demolition of an existing concrete barrel arch bridge and construction of a new structure supported by 26 No 273mm diameter cased piles. Piling, demolition and construction will be carried out in house by our specialist teams with works scheduled for completion in May 2018.

    Peniel Green Soakaways Success

    In December Quantum was approached by City & County of Swansea following an initial ground investigation in August 2017, to discuss engineering options to deal with flooding along the cycleway located off Tae Road, Peniel Green in Llansamlet. Following short periods of rainfall the area rapidly floods. Quantum designed and installed borehole soakaways to depths in excess of 25m and installed drain access chambers connecting the ditch drains to the boreholes. The scheme proved successful, providing a potential significant cost-saving and making the cycleway available to the public.

    Highways England GI

    Quantum have been awarded the Ground Investigation for A52 &A43.A45 Trunk Road Sites under Area 7 for Highways England. Works include cable percussive, rotary drilling, window sampling and TRL DCPs at various locations along the route. The £25,000 scheme will also include soil vacuum excavation to locate and expose existing buried utilities provided by Quantum.

    Building Stability in Swansea

    Quantum have recently completed a ground improvement scheme at Beaufort Avenue, Swansea. A domestic building had suffered settlement and Quantum were awarded the contract to stabilise the ground beneath the property by injecting grout into the underlying soils from ground level down to bedrock at around 7.0m depth. The grout was injected via Ischebeck TITAN hollow micropile bar installed using a specially adapted short stroke drilling mast enabling the works to be carried out from within an existing ground floor room with minimal disruption.

    Durleigh WTW

    Works at Durleigh Water Treatment Works are now complete undertaken by Quantum’s South West Regional Office on behalf of Wessex Water Services Ltd under the existing Geotechnical Framework. The £43,000 Ground Investigation included cable percussive and rotary cored boreholes including a PAS128 utility survey.

    Back to Mountain Ash – Phase III Cross Valley Link GI Awarded

    Quantum return to Mountain Ash to commence the next phase of the ground investigation works for the proposed Cross Valley New Link Road. Having undertaken the two previous ground investigations for the Local Authority, Quantum were awarded the next phase by the confirmed Principal Contractor constructing the new link, Walters (K) Ltd with Scheme Designers, Ramboll UK Ltd, also on board.

    Further Skanska GI Contracts Awarded

    Our excellent and thriving relationship with Skanska Construction (UK) Ltd, continues with the award of two new reservoir ground investigations; Crai Reservoir near Sennybridge and Craig-Y-Pistyll Reservoir near Aberystwyth. Both schemes present challenging access and environment constraints with a variety of intrusive investigation methods to be utilised. Works are anticipated to commence late November, early December.

    Successful GI Completion at Five Roads

    Quantum’s South Wales Geotechnical Dept successfully complete ground investigation for proposed upgrade of existing primary school at Five Roads, Llanelli on behalf of Carmarthenshire County Council. Opus International (UK) Ltd were the Project Engineers. The works included window sampling, dynamic probing, machine excavated trial pits and a variety of in-situ testing, all undertaken using Quantum in-house plant, equipment and laboratory services.

    A warm welcome to our newest team member, Daniel John, who joins the South Wales Geotechnical Department. Working out of our Bynea Head Office, Dan joins the team as an Engineering Geologist, having previously worked for Geotechnical Engineering Ltd. Dan brings with him several years’ experience managing a variety of ground investigation schemes across the UK with his most recent role that of commercial manager in his previous employment.     Exciting Developments at Mumbles Pier

    Quantum have been awarded the ground investigation and consultancy works for the proposed foreshore development adjacent Mumbles Pier, Swansea. The sizeable works entail a number of rotary cored boreholes, trial pits, window sample and probes to determine ground conditions initially for a new boardwalk along the seawall and development of the former Cinderella’s Nightclub. Further investigation works are anticipated for the next phases of the development.

    Quantum Expand Drilling Fleet

    In response to an expanding workload Quantum Geotechnical have just purchased a third Tei HEM 560 Drill mast.  This fleet expansion will allow us to undertake larger soil nailing, rock bolting and ground anchoring projects nationwide as well as increasing capacity in preparation for the upcoming workstream flowing from our inclusion on the Highways England framework.

    Phase 2 Investigation Works at National Botanic Garden of Wales

    Quantum are delighted to have been awarded the second phase of investigation works at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthne as part of the prestigious Regency Restoration Project. Having completed the first phase in 2016, Quantum mobilised to site mid-September to further investigate the former dam structures. This work forms the initial stages of what will be a spectacular restoration project bringing the former intricate and stunning water features back to life as they were over 200 years ago! Quantum are privileged to be part of this local scheme.

    Completion of First Project for Wessex Water Services

    In June 2017, Quantum was appointed as one of the preferred contractors on the Wessex Water Site Investigation & Contaminated Land Services Framework, which will run for a period of five years. Wessex Water covers an area of over 10,000 sq. km in the South West of England and Quantum are pleased to have completed its first site investigation at Cromhall STW at Baden Hill, South Gloucestershire. The Framework will be managed by Quantum’s South West regional office, headed up by Jim Dennis and Ben Tucker.

    Phil Darby is appointed as GI Operations Co-ordinator!

    Quantum’s Senior Engineering Geologist, Phil Darby, takes up his new role as Ground Investigation Operations Co-ordinator. Responsible for the South Wales based geotechnical team, Phil will administer and co-ordinate all ground investigation and consultancy contracts. Having been with Quantum for just over five years and in the industry as a whole for over 10 years, Phil will now lead a team of Engineering Geologists and Senior Technicians, driving the Geotechnical and Ground Investigation sections forward.  We wish Phil every success in his new role.

    Coming up to his 15th year with Quantum and having formerly worked for Thyssen Geotechnical, from which Quantum evolved, Ross takes over all operational, commercial and SHEQ matters within the company.     Phase 2 Ground Investigation at Shoeburyness MoD Base

    The latter half of September sees Quantum complete the second phase of ground investigation works at Shoeburyness Ministry of Defence base, Essex. The works are part of ongoing developments and comprised cable percussive boreholes with rotary follow on through the overlying alluvium deposits and into the deeper lying London Clay strata to assist with piled foundation design on behalf of the Client and in conjunction with the Main Contractor, Dawnus Construction Holdings Ltd, London office.

    Increasing Capability and Capacity!

Our Contracting section have enjoyed a thriving Summer with increased soil nailing and rock anchor projects. The need for additional plant was critical and ensures that we continue to offer highly competitive rates and a diverse range of ground stabilisation and improvement services.     Phase 2 Ground Investigation Works, Gorslas

    Carmarthenshire based construction company, Lloyd and Gravell Ltd, in conjunction with Carmarthenshire County Council, appointed Quantum to undertake a second phase of ground investigation at the proposed location of a new Primary School, located in the heart of Gorslas, Carmarthenshire. Following a review of past studies, Quantum scoped the ground investigation including an assessment of historic coal mining risks, environmental and geotechnical appraisals. We are due to complete all investigation works by the end of September 2017.

    Successful Completion of Ground Investigation, Welshpool

    Quantum’s Geotechnical Team successfully completed a three phased ground investigation in Welshpool on behalf of Dawnus Construction Holdings Ltd. The site works included rotary and dynamically sampled boreholes, trial pits, window sampling and in-situ testing at three closely sited areas for the development of an existing school and construction of a new school. The road network that currently serves the existing school and will also serve the new school was also investigated as part of the scheme. The £57k investigation was completed ahead of schedule during the school summer break.

    Welcoming Back Team Members!

    Quantum welcomes back Ben Tucker as a Senior Engineering Geologist based out of the Exeter office. Ben previously worked for Quantum at its Llanelli office back in 2012. Following a move back home to Devon in 2014, Quantum are delighted to have Ben back on board.     Ground Investigation Scheme Awarded at Wheal Jane, Cornwall

    Quantum are one of the preferred contractors on the Coal Authority Framework, and were awarded the investigation works associated with an existing abandoned tin mine shaft to aid with stabilisation and capping design parameters. A series of open hole drilled boreholes were undertaken in August 2017 managed by Quantum’s South West Regional Office based in Exeter. The works were successfully completed and Quantum’s excellent relationship with the Coal Authority continues to thrive.

    Quantum Complete Sea Wall Anchors

    Quantum have completed a challenging ground anchoring project at Teignmouth Point, Devon. The works comprised the installation and testing of Dywidag double corrosion protected ground anchors and Ischebeck TITAN 52/26 self drilling anchors during the construction of a new sea wall and promenade by local marine specialists TMS Maritime Ltd. The works were carried out intertidally using our Comacchio MC600 drill rigs and Tei HEM 560 drill masts.

    Ground Investigation for Highway Flood Adaptation Programme, Worcestershire

    Quantum continue to establish themselves in the West Midlands, successfully completing its first ground investigation scheme on behalf of Worcester County Council. The £45k ground investigation formed part of the Council’s Strategic Economic Plan for the Highway Flood Adaptation Programme across Worcestershire to establish flood alleviation schemes. Comprising cable percussive boreholes, trial pits and cone penetration testing, in both the highway and adjacent lands, the two week site works were completed on time and to the satisfaction of the Client and scheme Engineers CH2M Hill (UK) Ltd.

    Plas Uchaf Reservoir, Llannefydd, North Wales

    The Ground Investigation site works at Plas Uchaf Reservoir, Llannefydd, North Wales is now completed. Working on behalf of Skanska Construction UK Ltd, Quantum were instructed in June 2017 to undertake a challenging investigation along the existing reservoir spillway. With intricate scaffold structures, procured by Quantum, required to create access for Quantum’s rotary drill rigs across the sensitive dam crest and into the spillway. The £200k contract and 8 week site works programme has been delivered successfully, with all interested parties extremely happy with Quantum’s service.

    RISQS Audit

    Following our recent annual Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme ‘RISQS’ audit we are pleased to announce that Quantum Geotechnical Limited have maintained our 5 Star RISQS Achilles Rating. With an increasing number of Quantum’s specialist site operatives and fully trained geotechnical engineers fully PTS and ICI certified; Quantum continue to increase their client base and work areas within the rail sector.

    Contract Awarded at Milford Haven Lock

    Quantum Geo-Contracting were awarded the contract to install a new rotork unit base and sluice gate at Milford Haven Lock on behalf of Milford Haven Port Authority. Works comprised temporary access works to the vertical access shaft, controlled demolition of the original concrete structures and the construction of a new reinforced concrete base.  The final stage of the works was the removal by divers of the temporary steel sluice blanking plates allowing the new sluice gate to become operational.

    Extended UKAS Accreditation

    Quantum Geotechnical’s Soils and Materials Testing Laboratory has recently extended its scope under the existing UKAS Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2005. In addition to the existing UKAS Accredited Schedule for soils classification testing and concrete cube testing, we can now offer our Clients UKAS Accredited in-situ testing. This includes Plate Bearing Tests, CBR Tests by the plate bearing method and CBR Tests by dynamic cone penetrometer. This allows us to provide Clients with a high quality testing service, with the Accreditation required on most Public, Private, highways, building and infrastructure projects.

    Ground Investigation Awarded in St. Albans

    Inaugural Contract Award on the Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) Framework. Quantum have been awarded its first ground investigation contract for a site in St. Albans (£85k). Tasked with undertaking deep CP boreholes, DPSH probes and WS boreholes, the works are programmed for three weeks commencing last week in July. Two CP and two DPSH rigs will be drilling to depths of up to 40m through the local Chalk geology targeting zones of microgravity anomalies identified by pre-works Geophysical scanning. Opus International (UK) Ltd will be the Scheme Engineer.

    Quantum Complete First GI for East Devon District Council

    Employed to undertake a series of probe holes along the scenic headland of Annis’s Knob in Beer, the project presented many challenges none more so than physically accessing the top of the headland with suitable drilling equipment adapted specifically for the job. With over 300m of narrow steep footpath to traverse, Quantum successfully installed a number of 25m deep Inclinometers and Extensometers through the chalk strata along with surface Settlement Plates to permit long term monitoring of the headland.

    Slope Stabilisation Works at Hook WTW, Pembrokeshire

    Quantum Geo-Contracting has completed slope stabilisation works on behalf of J N Bentley Ltd at Hook Water Treatment Works, Pembrokeshire.  Excavation for an extension to the water treatment plant required temporary support. Works comprised the drilling of 140 soil nails up to 10.5m long and the installation of 400sq.m of rockfall netting.  Using our TEi Hem 560 drill masts we were able to achieve high production rates at varied orientations up to 7.5m above working platform.

    New Premier Modular 100 Rig

    Quantum Laboratories recently purchased an additional Premier Modular 100 Rig to continue expanding their testing capabilities and capacity. With Quantum experiencing an increased rail workload, the specialist light weight and highly versatile rig is ideal for the often difficult and restricted accesses rail sites pose, whilst also offering our Clients a variety of options. Complementing our existing Dando Terrier Rigs, the Modular 100 Rig is capable of Super Heavy Dynamic Probing, SPT/CPT Testing and Windowless Sampling, the rig can also undertake U38, U70, UT100 and Concrete Coring.

    Mount Coffee

    Ground investigation, earthworks assessment and design and construction of a grout curtain at the Mount Coffee Hydroelectric Project. The scheme comprised the rehabilitation of a hydroelectric power plant that had fallen into disrepair during the Liberian Civil War. Quantum undertook a number of ground investigation packages for a variety of elements associated with the redevelopment of the site including proposed transmission line towers, proposed sub-stations and new dams. A geological mapping exercise backed up by extensive trial pitting was undertaken to characterise the available residual soil materials in the locality. View Article

    Site Investigation Contract for Torfaen Sixth Form College

    Quantum have been awarded the Site Investigation contract for the proposed new Torfaen Sixth Form College at the former Meritor Site in Cwmbran. Quantum will be working directly for Principal Contractor, Interserve, alongside the Scheme Engineering Consultants, Opus.

    Contracting Works on the A39 at Treluswell, Falmouth

    Quantum completed works for Cormac Solutions on the A39 at Treluswell. Works comprised design and execution of temporary rock stabilisation as well as bulk hard rock excavation beneath the live highway.  Using one of our TEi Hem 560 drill masts mounted on a 25T excavator we installed 35 6m long rockbolts before carrying out controlled excavation and removal of 40 cubic metres of hard granite bedrock. Works concluded with the placement of a temporary A393 structural mesh overlain with rockfall netting; securing the embankment whilst the retaining structure was constructed.
